The judges for the preliminary rounds were Rajeev Fallen, Guru Somayaji, and Prasad Bhat. For the uninitiated, here’s a small write up about each of them.
Rajeev has been an active musician for over 20 years, having played previously with bands such as Stomp and Retronome. He is currently a solo recording artist working on his third studio album with his group, Rajeev and the Rebels. He is the owner of Kyra, Bangalore’s most popular live music destination, and is in the process of launching his own record label next year.
Guru Somayaji is drummer for Bangalore based band Parachute XVI. Guru’s musical career interestingly began off-stage working on the road for Thermal And A Quarter. With over 150 stage productions, he understands the in’s and out’s of stage production. He played at Strawberry Fields 2002 with Road Crew and made it into the finals that year. In 2006, he organised Thermal And A Quarter’s – ‘Getting There’ UK tour. Between 2004 and 2007 he played drums for His Girl Friday (Glasgow), an experimental/ ambient/ folk band. Between 2007 and 2008 he performed with alt-rock band Fangle Dangle & the Skoogle Skangle (Glasgow). Returning back to Bangalore, Guru gave up music for a year and pursued a career in journalism, conceptualising and launching Sunday DNA.
Prasad has been in the music scene for the last six years in bands Inviktus and Extinct Reflections. Both the bands, were the finalists of Strawberry Fields in 2005 and 2006. Extinct Reflections has opened for Sataricon and Lamb of God.
For the finals, we had the honor of having two more musicians in our roster, Hari Adiwarekar and Chris Avinash. Here’s a bit about both of them.
Hari Adiwarekar is a former member of the rock group Zebediah Plush. He worked with Worldspace for three years, in a dual capacity, as an RJ on their rock music station Spin, as well as as an editor for their music magazine. An accomplished freelance journalist for the last five years, Hari specializes in photography and writing, with music journalism being one of his strong suits as well as his most enduring passions.
Chris Avinash has had a prolific journey through the breadth of the Indian rock scene. As a former member of Angel Dust, he won Rocktaves (BITS Pilani), Strawberry Fields (NLS Bangalore) and Mood Indigo (IIT Powai) among many prestigious competitions between 1996 and 2002. Chris’s compositions, lyrics and guitar leads were the backbone of bands like Chromatix, Document:Done, S.T.O.M.P, Gudbud Narayan and the Avril Quadros Band. In May 2008, Chris launched Christortion – an independent recording studio where he mixes, masters, records and promotes artistes whose drive and talent capture his imagination. It has already produced two artistes and their debut albums, backed by A-list sessions musicians. That same year Chris was commissioned to and has successfully set up a recording studio for St Josephs Post Graduate and Research Center. Early in 2009, he executed the entertainment design for Kyra Theater, Bangalore His latest adventure in the spotlight is Retronome, a covers band that plays the biggest hits from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90.
